Oral Health and Hygiene for Your Overall Health

Proper oral hygiene prevents caries and periodontal disease and it also affects our overall health and well-being.

We are delighted that dentistry, as a health profession, leads the way in not just repairing the damage from disease and injury, but also in preventing it. Patient care is our entire focus. It is incredibly rewarding,  teaming with patients and helping them keep their teeth and gums healthy and fit for the rest of their lives.

CLEANING AND PREVENTION

Preventive dentistry is the key for you to maintain the highest standard of oral health while also limiting future dental expenditures. A partnership between you and our team is beneficial by protecting your smile now and well into the future.

At home, prevention includes brushing and flossing twice a day. Many strategies and oral health aids exist that will enhance your oral health care routine. Patients are surprised to learn that a particular toothpaste, rinse, or specialized toothpick can actually make a difference in their efforts. Our team will help customize solutions that enhance your daily routine to help turn any frustration into smiles as healthy changes that occur.

It is important to note that your diet does play a critical role in oral health. Acidic foods and soda drinks and certain alcohols can accelerate deterioration of your teeth, and certain foods can enhance the health of your supporting jawbone and gums.

Gum disease or periodontal disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults today. It can be a devastating condition when left untreated and periodontitis can be treated. A strategic approach with focused treatment and home care is essential to control this chronic bacterial infection. It is also important to note that this disease can aggravate other serious medical conditions that may seem unrelated to your mouth.

Every time you’re in our chair, we review many aspects of your health. Subtle changes in the lining of your mouth call for a closer evaluation, regardless of whether you use tobacco or not. Early detection of oral cancer is key to saving many lives every year, and we’re trained to recognize a myriad of oral tissue abnormalities. Remember, just because you think you're not at risk it is incredibly important to get a baseline in case of unexpected changes.

TEETH BREAKING AND GRINDING
After decay and periodontal disease, this is the most common cause of tooth loss. You may notice teeth that are painful to bite on. Other signs are sore jaws when waking in the morning or headaches. Affected teeth can be protected by bite protection appliances (night guards) or strengthened with protective restorations.

DRY MOUTH
Did you know that low levels of saliva production can be uncomfortable, and also lead to increased levels of cavities. Be sure to mention to us if you have noticed changes in the moisture level of your mouth. We have options that can help you.

FOR KIDS: SEALANTS
Starting at around ages 6 to 7 and extending into the middle teen years, the biting surfaces of the molars can develop alarming rates of decay. Much of this problem can be arrested with sealants, which, if done early enough, can prevent this kind of decay.
